Lee Secures 2nd Place in the Club Championship!
After some hard fought races, Lee wins both Sound of Thunder Races at Mallory Park and secures 2nd place in the club championship. He also takes the ZX10R out and finishes 4th in the Pro-Bike Race.
"Great racing again, with Howarth and myself doing 56's in the points race" Explains Lee, "A big thanks to my team as without them I'd never get on the grid... Especially Dad who never gets thanked and has to put up with me being a miserable git when things don't go my way!!". Lee's Aprilia is now up for sale - if anyone is interested, please contact Lee through the contaus us page.

Lee Secures 2nd Place in the SuperClub Championship!
After a disastrous weekend at Cadwell Park, Lee bounces back (despite being totally beaten up from his Highside the week before) and takes a win, two 2nd's and a 3rd in the Sound of Thunder races at Donington Park. He also takes the ZX10R out for a 3 races and finishes 11th, 6th and 5th as he starts to get to terms with the Kawasaki.
Congratulations to Les Liney for his race win and securing 3rd place in the championship! "Great racing with the old skool at Donington Les, Kevin Jones, Dean Wane and Adrian Grove were all up for it and we had some great races" Explains Lee. "Getting back on the bike was the best thing for me and I'm right up for the challenge at the last round of the Club championship on the 31st!"

Lee crashes out in the points race at Cadwell Park.
After a good set of 3rd place finishes (and setting his own personal best lap time of 1.38.17) on the Saturday, Lee highsides out of the points race on the Sunday whilst fighting for 2nd place. Unfortunately this meant Lee can only achieve 2nd place in the championship at best, with 3rd place Howarth on 5 points behind Lee - its all to play for at the final round at Mallory Park on the 31st of October.

Lee scores more valuable points at a soaking wet Silverstone.
Lee runs the first Pro-Bike race on the ZX10R and finishes 5th (setting a faster lap than the fourth place finisher). He then finishes 2nd to Howarth in both Sound of Thunder races.
"It was harder than I thought to switch from the ZX10R back to the Mille, which caused me to make some mistakes early on in the first Sound of Thunder race - this let Howarth escape." Explains Lee. "The second race was wet - very wet, and I was also struggling to see in places, as the sun was very low. Howarth was a lot more committed than I was prepared to be and managed to slowly get away from me. I was happy to consolidate and take the 20 points - focusing on the overall championship, rather than risking a crash in treacherous conditions".

Lee has first outing on the ZX10R
Lee ventures out on his new ZX10R superstock bike for the first time at Castle Combe.
With the bike barely finished in time to ready to race, Lee enters the Pro-Bike races at the Superbike meeting at Castle Combe. The bike is absolutely standard except for having the front forks reworked, an ohlins rear shock and an end can.
Lee manages a fourth place in the final race on Saturday. Sunday's races were plagued with brake problems, with Lee's best finish being a sixth place despite having virtually no brakes towards the end of the race!

Lee does a Double Double at Pembrey!
The scores 4 wins out of 4 races at the Welsh Circuit and strengthens his 2nd place in the club championship, moving to within 46 points of the championship leader with 100 points still up for grabs in the final 4 rounds.
"It was hard work, " explains Lee, "Michael Howarth (the rider chasing Lee in the championship) was a fierce competitor and we battled all the way in the points race on Saturday". "We spent 50% of the last lap bashing fairings - it was an awesome race! Fair play to Howarth, as it was his first time at the circuit and he was right on the pace - roll on Silverstone in 2 weeks!"

Lee starts to get to grips with Brands Hatch!
Having only ridden the circuit on a busy track day a month before, Lee has to race at Brands Hatch - still with the standard engine in the bike.
Lee qualifies 9th, but improves in the races and finishes 8th and 5th respectively. "I'm quite pleased with the results, considering my lack of knowledge at the track", says Lee. "Carl Marsden has now secured the championship and I have moved into 2nd place with it all to play for at the final round at Donington Park!"

Lee bags two podiums on a standard engine!
With the engine out of the No.1 bike and 2nd place in the New Era Sound of Thunder championship to defend at Castle Combe the team needed to be prepared a machine quickly. Fortunately Lee found an engine for sale on the internet auction website Ebay, and won the bidding at £550. “It was a standard engine out of a road bike that had done 6,000 miles, but we were getting desperate!” explains Lee.

With only two evenings to build the bike the team worked frantically and finished the bike the night before the Castle Combe race day.
With no prior practice on the machine, Lee managed to qualify in 7th place ahead of several superbike specification machinery on the 42 strong grid.

After a hard fought race 1 with Nigel Manning-Morten (a local track expert) and Kenny Whatmore, Lee finished 2nd behind Nigel Reed on his Suzuki.

In the championship race Lee rode a well measured race to finish 3rd behind Pensavalle on his Ducati Superbike and the persistent track specialist Reed. This result strengthens Lee’s 2nd position in the New Era club championship and increases his advantage over 3rd place to 9 points.

On Monday the bike was dyno'ed by Craig at DynoTorque and it was only putting out 122 Bhp - which makes Lee's results even more impressive!

Lee homes in on 2nd place in SuperClub.
Having no real experience at Oulton Park (other than 2 wet races earlier in the season), Lee invites Dean Ashton along to the practice day to help Lee learn the circuit.
Despite Dean's great tuition Lee was still off the pace and qualified in 10th place, however he managed to improve on both his times and positioning during the racing and finished 6th in both races. With 2nd place man failing to finish in either races, Lee closes to within 6 points of 2nd place.
"I had some great scraps with the SoT old skool - Kevin Jones, Les Liney and Dean Wayne - probably the most fun racing this year" , said Lee. These results are despite the problems continuing with Lee's No.1 Bike. "The engine in the No.1 bike is not happy", explains Lee, " we stripped it out yesterday and I drove it up to Steve Howlett last night for him to strip, inspect and rebuild. We may well be running on a standard engine for a bit - My trusty 120Bhp No.2 bike!"

Lee Strengthen's 2nd Place in Club Championship.
Despite having problems with the bike, Lee rides to a solid 4th place in the championship race to increase his advantage in the championship. The race had an unexpected winner - Dave Wood (British Superbike Privateer) turned up on a standard Suzuki TLR to make the rest of the field look like real amateurs - an embarrassment for the Superbike Spec riding fraternity and an inspiration to the rest of us riding standard machinery!

First win of 2004 for Lee!
Racing at Pembrey in the BMCRC Nationwide Championship Lee beats the top riders in the MRO Mille Challenge and Phil Bevan (Pembrey Track God!) on his super quick Ducati in the races on Saturday.
The racing on Saturday was supposed to be practice for Lee riding on the Dunlop 207 RR tyres for the MRO Mille Challenge on the Sunday, but the weather had other ideas... "I couldn't believe it when it came in wet on Saturday, We'd not been able to book the practice on the Friday to get an opportunity to ride on the RR's before the races, so we were going to use the races on Saturday to get used to them. When it came in wet, we had to run my normal wet tyres.". Lee started from 27th on the grid in the first race to finish 2nd, in race two (starting on the grid were he finished in race one), Lee took the lead 3 laps from the end of the race to take the win. "I was really glad to break the duck we seemed to be carrying round this year, but concerned that we'd still not tested on the Dunlop tyres before the MRO round".
The weather on Sunday changed to brilliant sunshine and Lee had to go and qualify on the RR's with no prior practice. Lee crashed on the 4th lap after putting in a 1.04 lap time. "It was a quick crash!", said Lee, "Through the fast right after the left handers of Paddock Bend. The back end just came round without warning and the next thing I knew I was skidding across the grass on my arse! - A real shame because that lap was so much quicker than the previous one!". Despite being beaten up, Lee and the team (Lee's Dad) worked hard to get the bike back together for the racing. Despite crashing so early in the qualifying Lee had still managed to qualify 10th on the grid (only 1 second slower than Darren Jones - the championship leader). To cut a long story short the race ended up being run under wet conditions and although the team had time to change the tyres before the race, the rain came down heavy as the race started and unfortunately Lee had selected to go for only a wet front and not a wet rear. "I tried to race with the rubber we had on but I was heading for another crash.. I managed to get up to 4th or 5th on the first lap, but the rear kept going round of the exit of every corner. When I got a massive high side out of the hairpin - which I luckily saved, I decided to call it a day and pull out".
A real disappointment for the team after the success of Saturday, but never the less - Lee feels he has demonstrated he can ride competitively at this level.
Lee will be racing again when the Superclub championship goes to Snetterton in July.

Mixed up weather at Oulton Park
Having no real experience of the circuit, no practice and only a track day a week prior to racing - Lee had is work cut out at Oulton Park. "The day started very poorly - we didn't have a bike that ran come practice, we finally got out for one of the practice sessions in the pouring rain." Says Lee, "I had a right battle in the Championship race and got held up by one of the riders for too long, which enabled the leaders to get away. I'm happy with the 4th place considering the conditions and my total lack of circuit knowledge. Congrats to Simon Nuttal on a great race win!".

Two 3rds at Donington Park
Lee has some great rides at Donington Park circuit and takes home some silverware (well plastic coated in silver type covering!) at the Club Festival (non championship) round. "Great fun, despite some unnecessary hostilities in the paddock, Achieved my best lap time to date and in the second Sound of Thunder race I was only beaten by two Ex BSB Ducatis, so I'm very pleased with the results." Says Lee. "Boy those BMW Boxer Cup boys can ride hard, I only caught Richard Cooper on the last lap and he didn't want to let me past!"

Bridesmaid Again!
After an appalling first race, Lee gets another 2nd place finish in the points race at Mallory Park on Sunday.
"In the first race we had a Superstock bellowing out smoke ahead of us and I was slightly concerned he was either going to crash or someone else might, which delayed my progress through the pack from the back of the grid... To be honest it was probably my worst race this year. But then what a turn around", Lee continues, " I made a great start in the points race and lead for the majority of the race, only to be past by a far superior horse powered Ducati down the start/finish straight. I managed to re-pass him around Gerards and hold him off until we reached the start/finish straight again, when this time I was passed earlier and I was unable to make up all the ground to re-pass at Gerards, we then hit back markers which made the win impossible." This second place finish and 20 points lifts Lee to 2nd in the championship, "Shame we couldn't hold on for a few more laps, but thoroughly enjoyed the race and content with the championship positioning considering the strength of the field.

Hard Fought Racing at Cadwell Park!
Lee qualifies 5th on the grid for the four races at his dreaded Cadwell Park Circuit (Cadwell was the track Lee crashed at in 2002 and smashed his upper left arm to bits - leaving him out of racing for 18 months).
Lee just missed getting on the podium with three 4th's - but his best race (and lap time - a 1min 38) was when he finished 6th. "The first race on Sunday was awesome - I kept with the leaders for most of the race, until I made a mistake going through Hall bends and did some lawn mowing! I still only finished 9 seconds of the winner - 12 seconds ahead of the 7th place man".

Always fighting a losing battle against the far superior Superbikes at the Snetterton Circuit, Lee leads the points race for a couple of laps on the Saturday to eventually
finish 3rd.
He fights even harder and leads several times on the Sunday, to be caught out by rain and crash at the Esses.
"Great racing, don't really care that we ended up on the deck", says Lee, "The bike and I came away un damaged and I think we demonstrated to the other boys who's the boss in terms of riding ability....", "At the end of the day.......
the best BIKE won!"... Roll on the next meeting....

Dirty track costs Lee his first race win of 2004!
Lees crashes out whilst leading on the penultimate lap of race 1 at Mallory Park on the 18th of April. Lee (who was not seriously hurt in the accident) was forced out on a wide line whilst going around Gerards passing back markers. Unfortunately there was a patch of oil on the circuit which cause Lee's bike to lowside and crash. "It was a shame as I'd fought hard to to get out in front and to crash out and loose valuable points because of something on the circuit is really frustrating" says Lee. Even with this set back, Lee managed to get back out for race two and consolidate with a 4th place finish.
Steve rides two measured races to score points in both.

These results strengthens Lee's 3rd position in the championship, as the team look to the start of the Honda SuperClub championship (Pembrey at the begining of April).
Steve hopes to have the TLR sorted by then.

A Mixed Weekend at Snetterton - and not just the weather!
Every weather condition possible was thrown at the team at the Norfolk Circuit - Rain, Snow and Gales!
Great Results for Lee as he fights for two 4th places and enters Mallory Park next weekend sitting 3rd in the Championship.
"We have well exceeded our expectations in the results this weekend. Snetterton - as I have mentioned before is a power/wallet circuit and my bikes are only just faster than the standard road bikes. We were racing against ex-British superbikes and knew we would have our work cut out for us. Very happy with the results - especially with the result on Sunday on a dry circuit!"
Steve's bike has ignition problems and after limping round in race one on the Saturday, Steve fails to finish any of the remaining 3 races over the weekend as the TLR plays up.
Steve is confident to have the problem resolved for Mallory Park next weekend.

Poor Start to the Season
The EMRA meeting at Mallory Park on the 4th March was supposed to be a pre-championship shake-down for both riders and machines.
Due to Italian Incompetence - Ben's parts for his Ducati failed to arrive in time and Ben had to cancel.
Lee planned to set-up the SP1's new front and rear suspension on Wednesday Practice at Mallory Park. Unfortunately, although Lee still practiced, it was wet and even snowing on the day - hence dry set-up could not be tested. This had a disastrous effect on the Meeting on the 4th. The SP1 handeled like 'a rocking horse' and severally impacted Lee's results. Effort is being made to have these problems addressed for the 18/4/01 - Championship Round 1

We had photos taken on Saturday for the Coventry Evening Telegraph, with one of our new sponsors (Careys Nightclub). Copies of the images will be posted up as soon as we get hold of them!!
